Chromium oxide, or chromium trioxide, is one of the principal oxides of chromium. Because of its considerable stability, chromium oxide powder is commonly used as a pigment and was originally called viridian. It is used in paints, inks, and glasses. It is the colorant in “chrome green” and “institutional green.”
Another main application of Cr2O3 is for thermal spraying coating. The materials of thermal spraying coatings are commonly in forms of powder, wire or rod. They are heated and convert to micrometer-size particles. Then the particles are accelerated towards substrates and create a coating. Coatings of chromium oxide powder are chemically inert and wear-resistant.
